Leotards are items of clothing that are worn by gymnasts, acrobats, circus performers, figure skaters, dancers and athletes. Leotard is a skin tight garment and an important dance costume, that covers upper torso but it doesn't cover legs. It is a simple, one-piece item that is similar to a one-piece bathing suit. Most leotards are cut high enough on the leg to expose the underwear. However, this very fact allows free movements which is required for activities like exercising and dancing. Not only does the dance leotard provide the person wearing it to move freely, but it also provides them with warmth and comfort too. It can be worn underneath other dance-wear during a warm up and should the dancer choose it would provide adequate cover for their body during a class.
It was originally known as the maillot, that in French means one-piece garment, but after its creator, famous French acrobat Jules Leotard passed away it was named after him. He was a trapeze artist and his father was a gymnastics teacher. He wore an item of clothing that would serve to provide him with ease of movement while showing off his muscular physique, which later become known as the leotard.
Leotards can be uncomfortable when worn alone. There are several options of clothing that can be worn underneath. Underwear is usually not worn when wearing a leotard. A special type of underwear that is cut high can be worn if underwear is preferred, a thong or g-string are considerable. A seamless sports bra can also be worn if extra support is needed on top. Leotards are often matched up with tights. There is another popular version of leotard, which is known as unitard. Unlike leotard, unitard covers entire body including legs. Some women also wear leotards as a casual type of girl's clothing!
Leotards come in many different styles, colors, cuts and fabrics. They can be sleeveless or with half-sleeves or long sleeves. Variations can be seen in the neckline and the cut of the legs. Leotards vary with trends and styles in much the same way as other clothing. They are made with fabrics that stretch and give such as spandex and Lycra. They also come in many designs and colors. It is inexpensive and can be found in all dance-wear stores on the high street and online too.
